Elklan – Speech and Language Support for Pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties

Delivered in 10 weekly 2-hour sessions, this course is recommended for both teaching and support staff working with young people with Learning Difficulties or Speech, Language and Communication Needs associated with a range of other diagnoses, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). SENCos and SaLT Assistants would also find this course beneficial.

The course aims to increase participants’ understanding of many aspects of communication development, and how we can support young people in their learning environments, through a combination of supporting theory, reflective discussion and plenty of activity ideas. The topics covered include: an introduction to communication development, adult-pupil interaction and non-verbal communication, attention and listening, play and exploratory learning, understanding of language, Blank’s Language Scheme, promoting vocabulary development, developing expressive communication, supporting pupils with unclear speech and Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC), and social skill development.

The course has an accreditation option, and allows participants to study at their chosen level. A portfolio of evidence is submitted for this award. The Elklan Tutor will support participants to complete this portfolio, through feedback on written home tasks. It is also possible to attend the course without studying for the accreditation. For more information, please see the relevant sections on the Elklan website
